Celebration of 90th anniversary of Public Diplomacy in Chennai
A series of events in the honour of the 90th anniversary of Public Diplomacy and the system VOKS-USSF-Roszarubezhcentre-Rossotrudnichestvo was hosted at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture.
On November 28, was held a gala evening, conference “Public Diplomacy – the South Indian Vector”, opening of two photo exhibitions and gala reception for the friends and partners of the RCSC. The celebration was organized by the department of representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo in India together with the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in South India.
The event was attended by over 100 representatives of friendship societies, clubs and associations of RCSC, culture and science, businessmen, experts in Russian language and literature and students of Russian language courses. Among the distinguished guests were Mr. Sergey L. Kotov, Consul General of the Russian Federation in South India, Chief Justice of Madras High Court Mr. Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Mr.V.M.Lakshminarayanan, Founder and Chairman of Indo Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Mr. Gem R. Veeramani, President of Indo Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Ms. Janaki Krishnan, President of Indo Russian women’s association, Dr. Justice S. Mohan, President of Tchaikovsky Music Club, Dr. R. Rajagobal, Chairman of Indo Russian Centre of Rural Development, Mr. Thangappan, Secretary-General of Indo Russian Cultural and Friendship Society, Mr. Roosevelt, President of Indo Russian Film Club, Mr. S. Ravichandran, Director of Study Abroad Educational Consultants Pvt. Ltd., Mr. Veera Raghavan, Secretary of Madras Film Society, Dr. A. Azad, President of Alumni Association.
Program started with an opening of the photo exhibition “Public Diplomacy – the History of Friendship” prepared with the materials of Rossotrudnichestvo. The exposition includes about 50 historical pictures narrating about an era of formation and development of the movement of Public Diplomacy as well as the photographs of recent events in Moscow – Form “The role of public diplomacy in the development of international humanitarian cooperation” and the Fifth World Congress of Russian Compatriots.
Earlier there was one more exhibition “History of Indian-Russian Friendship and partnership between public organizations was opened at the RCSC, at which the photos from archives of partner organizations of the RCSC were presented. Rare photographs telling about prominent public figures who have dedicated their entire lives to a noble cause - the strengthening of friendship between the peoples of India and Russia, as well as about the history of cooperation and friendship of the RCSC in Chennai with various organizations - partners in the last 40 years, many of whom continue to cooperate even today.
In his welcoming speech Consul General of Russia Mr. S. L. Kotov, noted the important role of Rossotrudnichestvo in the maintenance and expansion of humanitarian contacts around the world, a powerful contribution of the organization and its representation in South India in development of the Russian-Indian friendship and cooperation. Then he said that India and Russia, the countries with rich culture that cherished traditions. Friendly relations between India and Russia have deep historical roots. Mr. Kotov also stressed that cooperation between two countries is developing dynamically, as evidence are many successfully carried out joint projects, for example, the NPP Kudankulam.
Addressing the audience, Mr. Mikhail Gorbatov, Deputy Head of mission Rossotrudnichestvo in India, told about historical stages of the system VOKS-USSF-Roszarubezhcentre-Rossotrudnichestvo. The report was a kind of excursion into the history of the organization, long-term activity which was aimed at overcoming the barriers of hostility and estrangement between peoples, establishment of peace, aspiration to friendship, assistance to mutually beneficial cooperation between the people and strengthening the foundation of unity. Then he focused on the major directions of the work of the Chennai department of representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo in India, aimed primarily at the spread of Russian language, promotion of Russian science, education and culture in South India, work with compatriots, implementation of activities in the field of international development assistance and public diplomacy. He thanked all the partners for the strong friendship and cooperation, support for the strengthening and development of humanitarian and cultural relations between the two countries, noting that alone it would be impossible to implement.
In the evening sounded the words of congratulations from the guests of honour, noted that in all the years of its existence the organization has made a significant contribution to the expansion of cultural, scientific and business cooperation with dozens of countries around the world, including India, in development of civil society and national diplomacy. They highly appreciated partnership of Rossotrudnichestvo which part is the Russian Centre of Science and Culture, with institutions, non-governmental organizations, personalities of science, culture, education, art and many Indian citizens. The participants shared their reflections of the brightest moments in the history of bilateral relations, the historical path of their country and Russia, on the unforgettable joint holidays and events and role of the Russian language in their lives. They also thanked the collective of RCSC for professionalism, culture, responsiveness and sensitivity in all situations and wished to continue the significant progress and achievements in the field of the development of good relations between Russia and India.
The RCSC partners prepared a cultural program. Video presentation “Why we learn Russian language”- it was a creative work of students of Russian language in which they spoke about Russia and its history, about beauty, great people, about modern projects, humanitarian cooperation and with own performance once again they underlined the sincere love for Russia, its culture and history.
Within this celebration open lessons will be held in schools.
In conclusion, a gala reception took place, where guests of the program were able to enjoy Russian cuisine and continue communication.
