The 80th Birth Anniversary of the world’s first woman cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova was celebrated in a function organised at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC) in Trivandrum from March 6 to 10, 2017. A Photo Exhibition and a get-together by fans of Tereshkova were the highlights of the programme. The function became unique thanks to the presence of a 23-year-old girl from Kerala, named “Tereshkova”.
Interestingly, the Kerala-born “Tereshkova”, became the star attraction of the day. Mr. Zahir Thankappan and Mrs. Krishnamma Thankanchi got married 25 years ago. In fact, Mr. Thankappan was a great fan of Valentina Tereshkova, and still remains her fan. Soon after the marriage, Mr. Thankappan told his wife that if they would have a daughter, he would like to name her “Tereshkova”. Fortunately, their first child was a girl. Thus, they kept their word, and named her “Tereshkova”. By doing so, an average family from the Alleppey District of the Southern State of Kerala in India recognised the courageous feat of a Russian woman, who became the world’s first woman cosmonaut.
The Kerala “Tereshkova” brought her passport to show that her official name matches with the Heroine of the World. She shared her aspiration of becoming a cosmonaut. “I am proud of having the name of Tereshkova. Like my parents, I also admire the courage of a woman, who made her first space flight in 1963”, said Tereshkova.
Tereshkova also cut the cake and shared the sweet with other participants.
Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation and Director of the RCSC in Trivandrum, Mr. Ratheesh C. Nair, presided over the function. Cine actress Ms. Sona Nair was present on the occasion too.
