The inauguration of the open Chess Tournament "Pobeda" took place on September 1, 2019, at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Trivandrum. The tournament was part of the 12-month long Festival "Pobeda", which is being organised to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet Union over Fascism in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. More than 100 players participated in the tournament.
Mr. Teeka Ram Meena, IAS., Additional Chief Secretary of Kerala State, who is also the Chief Electoral Officer in the state, inaugurated the tournament. In his address, he noted that chess is one of the sports events in which India and Russia cooperate. He said that Viswanathan Anand learned chess at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Chennai. He said that the 12-month long Pobeda Festival will create awareness among new generations about the sacrifice of the millions to mould a new geopolitical order.
Noted Malayalam film actress Ms. Sona Nair also joined Mr. Teeka Ram Meen in inaugurating the tournament.
Mr. Nityan S, won the Pobeda trophy with 6. ½ points. Mr. A. Harikrishnan won the second prize. Mr. Vishnu Menon and Mr. Manu K.V. won the third and fourth places, respectively.
Mr. Ratheesh C. Nair, Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation and Director of the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Trivandrum, presented Pobeda Trophy and cash prizes to the winners.
